As part of the weekly series “Let’s Walk About It’ hosted by the IIE Varsity College in Cape Town, Gender Violence in the (Spatial) City is a lecture expanding on the intangible and experiential factors that implicate safety in Cape Town, particularly for women. The talk drew from critical literature including Yasminah Beebeejaun’s Gender, Urban Space, and the Right to Everyday Life (2017), Linda Peake’s Gender in the City (2009), Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris and Renia Ehrenfeucht’s Sidewalks: Conflict and Negotiation Over Public Space (2010), Maryann Valiulis and Maureen Flanagan’s Gender and the City: The Awful Being of Invisibility (2011); and Rachel Pain’s Gender, Race, Age and Fear in the City (2001). The speakers reacted to extracts from the literature, drawing links to the spatial context of Cape Town. The talk invited the audience to participate in discussion at the end, however this aspect was not filmed in efforts to maintain a safe space for those participating who were not comfortable with being recorded.
